This book has a message; nobody survives Juarez, Mexico. The message is delivered in a gritty, journalistic style with sparse dialogue and an emphasis on powerful descriptions. Vignettes focus on the action/reaction interplay between key cartel players and a war-weary newspaperman. The rampages of the cartel hitmen are frighteningly real and speak to the author's expertise. The style might not be conventional but the issues THE PLAZA raises are key to understanding Mexico's drug war and the violence that is spilling over the US-Mexico border.
The Plaza is fiction, but yet there is truth in its delivery. Spellbinding in its graphic descriptions of the present drug empire, we are so mesmerized with the content that we keep reading to find out all we can about the main characters who live their lives so openly.

The Plaza brings you inside the hearts and souls of those living in Juárez, and what they deal with day to day. Dead bodies, cordoned crimes scenes, women and children crying nearby for the loss of a friend or family member. Vehicles riddled with hundreds of AK rounds. Drug cartels running rampant, doing and taking whatever they please, all while fighting each other and their government. It’s a city saturated with corruption at local, state, and federal levels—fueled mostly from drug money. Who are the bad guys? Why aren’t they caught? How can they be stopped? These are questions you’ll be asking yourself after reading Guillermo Paxton’s The Plaza. Paxton doesn’t hold back, making it feel all too real, bringing the reader to Juárez to experience it for themselves.

Follow three main characters in this third-person narrative, all with different agendas. Juan is an ex-con released from a US prison and crosses the border into Juárez looking for work, knowing the States have nothing to offer him with a resume like his. Crime, killing, and rape are something he is more than accustomed to. Felipe is a guy living in Juárez who is just doing all he knows. He’s part of a cartel, doing whatever is asked of him, and he does it well. Saul is a journalist who writes for the Juárez Daily and seems to take offence to anyone who reads the PM (a yellow journalistic POS) instead. More importantly, Saul is the father of two young girls, and a husband to his beautiful wife, Edilia—the love of his life. He’s someone who believes the pen is mightier than the sword, following every crime scene, every lead, so he can tell the real stories. However, deadly cartels don’t like the truth being told and Saul begins treading in treacherous waters.

Anyone interested in the Mexican Drug War and drug cartels, will enjoy this fiction story intertwined with a non-fiction theme.

The book is a brutal tour de force, grim and tight, all the while juggling a fascinating web of characters, each on his or her own hellish journey. Felipe is a ruthlessly proficient killer working for La Linea, a drug gang fighting for control of the highly lucrative transportation routes through Chihuahua into the United States. Ruby is his ambitious femme fatale girlfriend and occasional assistant. Juan is a blood-thirsty gangbanger from Los Angeles--the birthplace of the modern gang, as the Mexicans in the book refer to it--recently deported to his country of origin after a sixteen year bit in an American prison. Saul is a reporter for the Juarez Daily, fighting the good fight despite all evidence that his stories will bring nothing but harm to him and his family. His wife Edilia is a reluctant activist who tries to stand up to the cartels when they kill somebody close to her. And Rogelio, a high-ranking member of La Linea and Felipe's boss, is the drug-trafficking analog to just about any predatory senior VP willing to do whatever it takes further himself and his firm.

Along with corrupt members of the police and armed forces, the aforementioned principals are the main players in a deadly and relentless game in which they all cannot help but partake, whether compelled by force or the demons within or just plain old greed. Paxton doesn't pull any punches in his visceral yet almost eerily nonchalant portrayal of the violence, corruption and death permeating every level of Mexican society thanks to what characters repeatedly refer to as "Calderon's War on Drugs". Poor people get sucked into the fight by the lack of reputable opportunities or merely victimized by extortionists or other criminals taking advantage of widespread lawlessness. And rich people, including cartel members, must always be on guard, hiding their wealth wherever possible, lest they be murdered by rivals or taken hostage by kidnappers. Even with all this action Paxton doesn't lose track of small yet significant details about Mexican culture, as evidenced when Rogelio, a tall, light-skinned northerner meets a squat, dark southerner from the fearsome Zetas who says

"You northerners are always so damn tall. I'm Nacho."

While associates in any new business venture are often sizing each other up, invoking the longstanding friction between the north and south of Mexico is a brilliant ice-breaker for a meeting that is rife with tension. Given the enormous profitability of eliminating anyone who might get in the way, the stakes could not be higher for Rogelio, Nacho and everyone else in THE PLAZA, which, like any good war story, has a cast that is mostly doomed. As a reader familiar with tales like this as well as some of the real life tragedies that have been reported in the news, I knew many of the characters were not going to make it. Yet I couldn't help but keep turning the page to see how it would all unfold. THE PLAZA is an awesome piece of work!
