This is a delightful read! The Summer of Shambles is a sweet story of love, kingdoms and ferrets with the mischievous Ondine challenged with saving the Duke from a devious plot. This is also the start of Ondine and Hamish's romance. Who knew ferrets could be so good looking in their human form. Can wicked magic be undone?
The writing style is just right for that wonderful age when the world of romance and love is just beginning. All tingly and sparky! :-)
The setting is superb! I want to book my next holiday in Brugel blending the best of European quirky destinations into one. What's not to like about castles and excellent scenery plus great food. Of course, I'm expecting them to score much higher at Eurovison next year though!
And footnotes! What a brilliant way to introduce backstory without disturbing the flow of the main story. And so quirky too!
With the fast moving story, footnotes and feisty characters, The Summer of Shambles will appeal to the intelligent reader who wishes an escape into a world where anything is possible.
Even good looking ferrets ...

It is full of laughter and happiness in the characters and the story is interesting as always. A good read for all ages.
The book was very interesting, I liked the sense of humour and the slight romantic feeling. Although I think this is a book more for young children I read it at the age of 13. I couldn't get my nose out of it and I can't wait to read the next book in the series!!
I won't bore you with summarizing the book, or a lengthy review. But I have to tell you how thoroughly enjoyable this book is. The humor is amazing, but the heart is what makes it special. Such a sweet, entertaining story.
It is hard with this book. In some ways it was extremely clever and if it were not a series I might have given it a better rating as it was amusing and I repeat clever. However having said that the idea of reading more was totally off putting. I found it childish as opposed to a book for a young adult audience and to have it continue on just doesn't make sense. Others may disagree.
I love it and I look forward to reading the other books in the series.
I LOVED this book!! It is sweet, funny, affectionate. I wanted to jump into this book and be one of the sisters!
Really, this is one of the best and funniest books i have ever read!
Being a fan of fairy tales in general i liked the sound of one that focuses on a scottish ferret and a young girl who gets sent to 'Psychic Summercamp' and falls in love with previously mentiones ferret, who is in fact a rather gorgeous man.
Honesty, if your a sceptic person with no imagination please put your reservations aside and give this a go.
Every other line will have you laughing, especially Hamish (the ferret), and his growing relationship with Ondine is wonderful to read about, it really captures the emotions (and embarrasments) of first love.
I also loved the Scottish language that was used, was absolutely brilliant, and it had me almost crying with laughter.
So really, don't be a bampot, give this absolutely fantastic book a read, you won't regret it.
(By the way, Bampot is scottish for a silly person lol)
