In reading REESE, I've discovered an absolute new favorite author. If Handland's other titles are as powerful as this one, her writing as rewarding a read, I'll buy everything she ever wrote. This book had me laughing (though the dialogue, where much of the humor came from, was often not true to the 1870s), crying, pleading with Reese to see through his war-ingrained stupidity (aren't all men stupid when it comes to women they love?), and rooting for Reese and Mary to connect permanently. These two so deserved each other. I loved the loyalty between Reese and his men, his own penance from a believable past, and the magical writing that sucked me into the 19th century and kept me there, captive to the story. I loved Reese's unique way of speaking. "Go. Go. Go!" and the fun way this pattern cropped up again. The lovemaking was in character and far more about the emotion between adults in love, between an inexperienced woman and a man so in love he couldn't see straight, than about body parts and faceless characters coming together. So while not a "sweet" read (if we're talking sensuality level), it was the sweetest, most heartwarming, love story I've read in a long, long time. The author treated PTSD (long before properly recognized) very well, showing respect and courtesy to those who suffer from it. Kudos, Ms. Handland!Sensuality Level: Rated R, and so tastefully done!
Language: Moderate, but far less graphic than anticipated, or for the type of book.
Violence: Rated R, and all war-related, appropriate for the genre, era, and type of conflict in the book.
Not for the sensitive. Highly recommended to fans of historical romance set in the wild west, who don't mind lovemaking (on the page), a bit of language, or a little bit of inaccurate history mixed in with a lot most accurate history.

This actually has a good story the problem is trying to stay with what is happening when every fourth or fifth page the story stops and has to have 6 or 7/pages of sexual situations. Really ruined what could have been a decent book.
I bought this book and the audible version so I switched back and forth between the two. I definitely think that I would have enjoyed this much more if I would have only read the book and not listened to any of the narrated version because I didn't really care for the narrator. She read very well but I did not like some of the voices she gave the characters. For example, she made Jed sound like an old man. Granted this would be a difficult book for many narrators due to the number of male characters.
I thought that the introduction of the Rock Creek Six characters was very good. The love story was pretty good, although I thought the love scenes could have been better. I thought they were over before they got started.
I wasn't too crazy about the ending and how Reese just walks in and everything gets wrapped up nice and tidy. (I don't want to give anything away.so this is very vague intentionally.). However I am very intrigued to learn more about the Rock Creek Six. I love them all so far and will read the rest of the books in the series. If you are looking for a good western, gun slinger series, I definitely suggest you start with Reese even though I've not read the other books yet. The story that has been started for each of them in this books is excellent.
Starting "Sullivan" now.
This is a nice Western for those who don't want grit and realism in their reading. I did enjoy the book even though there were plot points that needed to be tightened up. I knew before I started reading that it was loosely based on the 'Magnificent Seven' movies, but I didn't expect it to cause me such difficulty. I kept comparing it two both movies (the Yul Brynner one is still my favorite) and that caused me to lose the thread of the book at times. However, the story is good and the author writes well. The school teacher, Mary hires Reese and his men to help protect their town from a band of men who are causing problems by coming into town and stealing everything they can. The townspeople are all cowards and Mary is the only one who has enough backbone to find a way to protect the town she loves. She is a great character. I admired her spunk and her willingness to go toe to toe with the men in town to do what she thought was right. Reese is a man who is haunted by the past. The happenings of the Civil War and the aftermath leave him with mental scars that he is unable to overcome. As a duo, they are great. The other men in the 'band of six' are also intriguing. ************SPOILER ALERT***********One of the main problems that I had with this book is the lead villain. He is just over the top evil. And, I found it really hard to believe that this elderly Indian man, no matter how devious, was able to lead a band of mostly white outlaws. At that time in the West, even half Indians were looked down upon. Maybe if his past had been explained (like how his English speech was so flawless and refined), I could have accepted it better. Also, his reasoning for not killing Mary and why he wanted the town really didn't make a lot of sense. *******END SPOILER********* There is a lot to like in this book, but I don't find myself wanting to read further in the series.
Sex scenes are not graphic, but some readers may object to them. I would rate them as PG
This is the first in a series of stand alone books.
